Nine of our Scouters gathered over the weekend to upgrade their canoeing skills. Canoeing is a great part of a Scouting program and this is especially true for Sea Scouts. We are starting a process of upgrading canoeing and sailing skills for all Scouters and older youth in our group so that they can lead fun and safe activities for younger members. Our Scouts spend 4-6 meetings canoeing and have a 3-day canoe trip each year. Our Cubs and Beavers have 2-3 meetings or day outings in canoes with their Scouters each year.
Our instructors this weekend were both ORCKA certified instructors and Scouters and Guiders with our group and others. Shannon, Dave and Keith led the ORCKA Basic Canoeing course. We’ll be doing it again in the spring and then every spring and fall with a goal of bringing at least half of our Scouters and Venturers up to an ORCKA Basic 3 standard. Three of our Scouters and one parent took part in a four week dinghy sailing course at QCYC in August. Several of our Scouts and Venturers did dinghy sailing camp at QCYC in July and August.
Thanks to all the Scouters who gave their time to this training and who give so much to provide a fantastic Scouting program in downtown Toronto.
