Sea Scout Newsletter – Feb ’26

Summer sailing and watersports registration open!

Our Scout Group has a close relationship with Queen City Yacht Club. Some of our programming will happen onsite on Algonquin Island through May and June. Several of our youth participate in the water based programs offered there in July and August. Registration is now open. More details in this post.

Skating Party – Wed, Feb 4

We’ll meet at Nathan Phillips Square from 6:30-8:30pm for skating, socializing and hot chocolate. Skate rentals are available at the rink. Please bring $10 for the skate rental if you don’t have skates.

Wannigan making – Sun, Feb 8 – 4 spots

This is for 4 Scouts only. RSVP in the ScoutsTracker. We got a lot done at the last making meeting and we will be able to finish most, if not all, of them this Sunday from 9am to 12:30pm. Wear work clothes, not your uniform. We’ll be painting and varnishing the wannigans. This is at Scouter Keith’s house – address in ScoutsTracker. Have breakfast before you come, but you’re welcome to stay for lunch if you like.

Hike in Biidaasige Park – Wed, Feb 12

6-8:30pm. We’ll leave the hall at 6pm and take TTC together. Alternatively, Scouts can meet us by the big owl at Biidaasige Park, across from 51 Commissioners Street at 6:30pm. We’ll finish there at 8:20pm. We will not return to the hall. We’ll hike through Biidaasige Park on Ookwemin Minesing at the mouth of the Don River. We’ll do some orienteering and if the skies permit we’ll look at stars. Scouter Keith explored here the other day and it was beautiful in the snow.

Dress for the weather! We will be outside the entire time and the paths are not ploughed. Boots are mandatory as is proper winter clothing in layers. Bring a water bottle and a snack.

Climbing – Wed, Feb 18

Winter Camp – Fri, Feb 27 – Sun, Mar 1

We will be staying in Lion’s Lair cabin at Everton Scout Reserve near Acton. We will travel by bus together.

Raingutter Regatta – Wed, Apr 8

Our second annual “Raingutter Regatta” indoor sailboat race will take place during our Wednesday meeting. We’ll meet early (6pm) and invite the Cubs to join us.

15th Anniversary of becoming Sea Scouts – Wed, Apr 22

We’ll celebrate our transition to Sea Scouts 15 years ago at the TPS Marine Unit in Toronto Harbour. Details of the celebration are TBA.

Joe Thorne Memorial Competition Camp – Apr 24-26

Think you’re a good camper? Prove it! This camp is a chance for older Scouts to test their skills against Crews and Patrols from across Toronto. More details to come.

Back to Biidaasige for boating skills and maybe to try fishing – Wed, Apr 29

Island Time! – Boating meetings start May 6

We’ll be starting our boating season Wednesday, May 6. Our boating season meetings start at 5pm at Queen’s Quay East and York Street. We return on the 9pm tender, landing where we started, at 9:15pm.

This year we’ll being dividing into groups and doing all kinds of boating every week: keelboats, dinghies, and canoes. In addition, there will be an extra keelboat sailing night available for keen Scouts on Tuesdays starting May 5.
