Our 15th Anniversary of becoming Sea Scouts

Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the day we became Sea Scouts in 2011. One of the Scouts from that time is now a Scouter with us! Welcome back, Scouter Long.

Scouter Keith shared a few memories before handing over the helm to our new Skipper, Ben, in a ceremony on the pier beside the station. We each received an anniversary crest and ate cake; yum!

Then we got a tour of the fireboats. The boats were very cool, but the tool for dragging for drowning victims got the most attention. Named for Toronto’s first mayor, the big fireboat Mackenzie has been in service since 1961. It was all pretty cool. The jet boat doesn’t have a name that I recall, but with a top speed of 40 knots it can go about 5 times as fast at Mackenzie. Though it has a much lower water pumping capacity and can’t be used in the winter. Mackenzie will be a core part of the marine unit for years to come.

Our new boating season starts in two weeks at QCYC and we’re all looking forward to a great new year on the water.
